Every season of Netflix’s Defenders franchise has been marked for removal under certain conditions as of February 11th, 2022. The removal notices display only when you first watch a show on a profile. The programs, which aired between 2015 and 2019, were produced before Disney chose to develop its own Marvel film franchise. The content’s Netflix license has expired, and Disney now owns the rights.

Are Marvel Shows Leaving Netflix?
Previously, Netflix contracts barred title characters from appearing in non-Netflix programs for two years after they were canceled. Those agreements have now expired, allowing Charlie Cox to reprise his role as Matthew Murdock, or Daredevil, in the Sony-Disney co-production “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” and Vincent D’Onofrio to reprise his role as Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin, in the Marvel series “Hawkeye.”
Over 160 episodes were removed over the course of four years. Season 1 of Daredevil debuted in April 2015 on Netflix.
By February 2019, Marvel’s entire Netflix slate has been canceled, with Jessica Jones season 3 being the final title released in June 2019.
Why Are Marvel Shows Leaving Netflix?
Given that Disney has begun to use characters from the Netflix Marvel programs in its other properties, the revelation shouldn’t come as a major surprise. We just saw Kingpin in the Disney+ drama Hawkeye, while Daredevil’s Matthew Murdock made a cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Disney CEO Bob Iger stated in 2018 that the company was actively pulling back from licensing to other firms. “We are absolutely dedicated to not only getting the product to market and making it a long-term success,” he said on an earnings call. It needs to be the one-stop-shop for everything Disney, which includes eventually weaning ourselves off of our goods being available everywhere other than our linear channels.”
