The Atlas by Olivie Blake Book Review
The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake is oddly matter-of-fact, eschewing on-page romance and coasting through violent action scenes with brevity. Similarly, rather than presenting a flow of narrative, Blake communicates characters through humorous banter and shows the world outside the Library’s magically warded walls exclusively through the scars it has left on her protagonists. The Atlas Six is sparse on exposition, with the longest sections consisting of character disputes on themes like the meaning of time and the conservation of magical energy. However, in Blake’s hands, these tracts are entertaining and frequently hilarious. So this rich plot combined with some witty writing makes The Atlas a good read and sets the tone for more to come.

The Atlas Six Plot
Every ten years, the Alexandrian Society, inheritors of the lost knowledge from its namesake library, recruits six of the most powerful young magic users, known as medeians. The Society’s headquarters are where the half-dozen potential initiates study and learn from the biggest compendium of magical knowledge ever created. Caretaker Atlas Blakely has chosen a sextet of particularly ambitious young medeians this year: three physical mediums who specialize in manipulating external forces and energies for purposes as diverse as deflecting bullets and obtaining midnight snacks; and three nascent masters of the mental, emotional, and perceptual magic of reading minds and concealing acne. But these newcomers are confronted with far darker secrets than the obscure information they all seek, as they are the central figures in a plot that has the potential to save or destroy the world.
