Sporting CP club
Sporting Clube de Portugal, also known as Sporting CP or simply Sporting, is a Portuguese sports club situated in Lisbon. It is renowned for its diverse range of sports departments and disciplines, as well as its impressive trophy collection. However, it is most famous for its men’s professional football team, which competes in the Primeira Liga, the top tier of Portuguese football.
Founded on July 1, 1906, Sporting is among the “Big Three” clubs in Portugal that have never experienced relegation from the Primeira Liga, along with their rivals Benfica and Porto. The team is affectionately nicknamed “Leões” (Lions) after the lion symbol in the middle of the club’s crest, and “Verde e Brancos” (Green and Whites) due to their horizontally striped green and white shirts. Their home stadium, the Estádio José Alvalade, was constructed in 2003, replacing the previous one built in 1956. The club’s anthem, “A Marcha do Sporting” (“Sporting’s March”), was composed in 1955, and its supporters are known as “Sportinguistas.” Sporting holds the second-largest membership in Portugal, with over 160,000 members, and ranks sixth in the world.
In terms of accolades, Sporting is the third most decorated Portuguese football team, having earned 54 major trophies. Domestically, they have secured 19 League titles, 17 Taças de Portugal, a joint-record of 4 Campeonato de Portugal, 4 Taças da Liga, and 9 Supertaças Cândido de Oliveira. In European competitions, Sporting won the 1963–64 European Cup Winners’ Cup and were runners-up in the UEFA Cup in 2005. They were invited to play in the first European Champions Cup match on September 4, 1955, and have appeared in the most editions of the UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League (32), achieving the second-highest number of matches played and won in the tournament, and ranking 2nd in the all-time club ranking.
